If your child is ready to audition professionally — or has an audition coming up and needs focused preparation — the quality of the coaching they receive beforehand matters. Here is what audition coaching at PopRock Academy looks like, how the sessions are structured, and what students who have come through this program have accomplished.
What a Session Covers
Audition coaching at PopRock is one-on-one and specific to the material the student is bringing in. Students arrive with their sides — the pages they will be performing — and work through them with a coach who can identify exactly what is working and what needs to change.
Paul Kwo coaches sessions personally. As PopRock's founder and a working Hollywood actor, he focuses students on making a clear, committed choice and holding it — the thing casting directors look for rather than a technically correct but uncommitted read. Sessions are available in-person at the Temple City studio or via Zoom, using professional studio equipment.
Session length depends on the role: for a co-star, the minimum is 15 minutes; for a guest star, 30 minutes. Self-tape sessions run slightly longer — 30 minutes for a co-star, 45 minutes for a guest star — because the time covers not just the performance but how the tape is set up and captured, so the submission looks right when casting receives it.
Self-Tape vs. In-Person: What Changes
The two formats require different preparation. In-person auditions happen in real time — there is a reader in the room, casting can redirect on the spot, and the performance lives in a shared physical space. Self-tapes are edited before anyone sees them, so a choice that feels strong in the moment can register differently on screen.
Coaching at PopRock addresses both formats separately. Students learn what the camera captures differently from the eye — how a slight stillness reads as confidence, when size needs to come down, when an adjustment in eye lines changes what a viewer experiences. PopRock's studio is equipped with professional equipment, so the tapes students submit reflect the technical standard casting expects.
What Makes a Callback-Worthy Read
Specificity. A student who arrives with a general read of the material goes in hoping; a student who arrives with a specific, committed choice goes in ready. PopRock's coaching is focused on getting students to the second place: not to perform the script, but to perform it as a particular character in a particular moment.
The Acting Conservatory's class sequence builds toward this. Fundamental Acting teaches listening and reacting. TV/Film/Commercial Acting adds the camera-specific skills — eye lines, micro-expressions, how to play to a lens. Audition coaching takes those foundations and sharpens them for the specific material a student is working on.
The Record
Students trained in PopRock's Acting Conservatory have booked Squid Game (Netflix, Seasons 1, 2, and 3), CBS Young Sheldon, NBC St. Denis Medical, The Bold & The Beautiful, ABC Will Trent, PBS Tiny Time Travel, Jane the Virgin, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Chuang Asia S2, and Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture. Commercial bookings include Toyota, Verizon, American Girl, Lowe's, Delta Air Lines, Lingokids, TruStage, Evernorth Health Services, and Dharman.
That is a record built across network television, streaming, international productions, and national commercial campaigns.
