We offer every piano student at PopRock Academy the opportunity to participate in an annual music theory exam. The examination is meant as a way for students to mark their understanding of music theory. The grades are not publicly posted (with the exception of perfect scores). In addition, we will gradually roll out music theory exams for other instruments in the future.

Requirements:
Students must have at least 6 months of piano lessons at PopRock Academy prior to participation in the examination.
Students are not required to take additional music theory workshop, but they are recommended.
Students who wish to acquire past exams outside of workshop may pay a $5 per exam fee.
Students who do not pass the previous year exam will take the same level examination the following year.

Private Lessons and Music Theory Workshops:
Although music theory is covered in private lessons, the primary focus of lesson is performance. Students are welcomed to take additional private lessons to focus on their music theory, but the more economical alternative are music theory workshops. Students will be able to study in a small class setting that will give students a more comprehensive understanding of music theory. Private lesson teachers will also not have to spend extra valuable lesson time working on music theory, but instead have more time to focus on performance.

Music Theory Workshop: Exam Prep
January and February
Sundays 2pm to 3:30pm
Cost: $160 plus $10 material fee*
This workshop will allow students to take past exams to prepare for the final exam in the spring. All study material is provided. Students weekly exams will be scored and be able to ask questions. We will be offering other music theory workshops throughout the year.
*Please note that this course is a specialty workshop and is not a part of our ongoing package.

Music Theory Exam:
Sunday, February 23, 2014, 2pm to 4pm – Pre-register by: February 22, 2014
Cost: FREE
Students must pre-register with our front office. Absolutely no drop-ins or late registrations. Students must bring their own pencils and erasers to the exam. No late admittance. Although the exam is free for all currently enrolled piano students, students who signs up but does not show will be charged a $10 material fee. No cancellations accepted once a student is registered.

PopRock Music Theory Award
We will be offering awards for all students who attain a perfect score on the music theory exam.
